Many people think wearing a retainer after braces is just a short-term thing, but the truth is different.
Dr. Shahira Saad, a dentist from the U.S., says you should wear a retainer every night for life if you want to keep your teeth straight and healthy. She shared this in a video, saying that teeth move over time, even if you’ve had braces before.
Teeth naturally shift because of things like jaw growth, chewing, and aging. Without a retainer, your teeth can slowly move back into gaps or crowd together, changing your bite.
Dr. Shahira says that teeth tend to return to their old position when people stop using their retainers. As we get older, teeth move forward, leading to crowding, especially in the lower front teeth.
What is a Tooth Retainer?
A retainer is a device made of clear plastic, acrylic, or wire that helps keep your teeth straight after braces. It keeps your teeth from shifting back to their original position.
Retainers also protect your teeth in the long run. They’re not just for looks – they help prevent tooth wear caused by grinding teeth while you sleep. Some retainers also reduce pressure on your jaw muscles and protect your teeth from too much force.
Dr. Shahira says that even if you never had braces, your teeth will move over time. Using a retainer helps keep your teeth looking good and also improves your dental health as you age.
While some doctors say you only need to wear a retainer for a few years, Dr. Shahira recommends wearing it every night for life. She also advises getting your retainer cleaned regularly at the dentist’s office using ultrasonic cleaning.
Dr. Shahira compares retainers to sunscreen, saying they should be a regular part of your routine to keep your smile healthy.
